Competition about elements in chemistry
Inga Karjalainen, Secondary School teacher (mathematics, physics and chemistry)
Name of school
We have about 550 pupils in Myllytulli school. They are 7-15 years old. We have two small classes where studies less than ten pupils with different needs of support. Our specialities are art classes.
Goals: To increase interest and knowledge about the chemical elements.
Methods: Three different 7th grade chemistry groups competed against each other in finding chemical elements or compounds from their homes or near surroundings. The teacher baked a cake for the winning group.
Materials: It was allowed to search information from the book and from the Internet. When the students found an element or a compound, they took a picture of it and uploaded it to the group’s Padlet-wall and named it. QR-codes were used to share the address.
Assessment: The teacher checked the Padlet-walls regularly and informed the students about the situation in competition.
ICT was used in documentation. The competition motivated the students to do their best.
When there were technical problems, the students helped each other.
The cake was delicious.
